Carlos TevezA spectacular strike by Stephen O’Donnell has earned the Partick Thistle defender a nomination alongside Carlos Tevez in World Soccer’s Goals of the Month.

For generations of pre- satellite football fans the monthly magazine was their opportunity to find out about what was happening across Europe and further afield.

The magazine has successfully transferred onto the internet with the Goals of the Month featuring global nominations.

O’Donnell is in his third season at Firhill, after being first choice right-back throughout Celtic’s 2010/11 double winning youth campaign, and scored his golden goal away to Dundee United.

Describing the strike World Soccer said: “In a sweeping move that goes from one end of the pitch to the other, the winger receives a back-heeled pass from team-mate Lyle Taylor before dummying an opposing defender and curling a left-foot shot inside the post for the visitors in their Scottish Premier League game at Tannadice Park.”

The win at Tannadice couldn’t have been better timed coming on the back of five successive defeats that had dragged Thistle towards the relegation dogfight.

After the win Thistle boss Alan Archibald said: “It was a great opening goal from Stephen O’Donnell. We had a chance before that too which we didn’t take but it was a great opening goal as I thought the chance might have been missed because Lyle Taylor might have whipped the ball across to Steven Lawless.

“The defence have had a lot of stick. It was probably the strongest part of our game during the first half of the season. However, in the second half of the season we’ve lost a lot of goals.

“They’ve been silly goals too, by playing in the wrong areas but here it was different as our defence was outstanding.”
