Striker - Leigh GriffithsA second half hat-trick from Leigh Griffiths against Dundee United took Celtic to within touching distance of the title.

With four matches left to play Celtic hold an eight point lead over Aberdeen and could claim 4-in-a-row next weekend if they beat Dundee at home on Friday and Aberdeen fail to win at Dundee United the following day.

United had enjoyed the better of the first half but Craig Gordon was rarely called into action with only a diagonal 25 yard drive from Robbie Muirhead to test the hoops keeper.

At the other end Virgil van Dijk and Kris Commons forced Rado Cierzniak into saves but it was a frustrating 45 minutes for the visiting support.

It took just two minutes of the second half for the hoops to find their form with a clinical Griffiths strike rounding off a move across the penalty box started by Stuart Armstrong and involving Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen.

Four minutes later Cierzniak pulled off an incredible save clawing away a Commons header from the top corner after a perfect cross from Johansen on the right.

In the 64th minute Griffiths put the game out of United’s reach although referee Willie Collum seemed to hesitate before awarding the goal.  A corner from Commons was headed goalwards by van Dijk, Griffiths’ first effort cleared the line but was scooped back by Cierzniak, Griffiths put the ball even further over the line with Cierzniak again attempting to clear before Collum acknowledged the goal as his assistant raced back towards the half-way line.

Efe Ambrose and James Forrest replaced Adam Matthews and the injured Johansen as Celtic cruised towards full points with Griffiths completing his hat-trick in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot.
