spflA Celtic XI will play Raith Rovers on July 22 to mark the renaming of the main stand in honour of Turnbull Hutton.

Hutton died last month after a short illness and is best known for standing up to the attempts of the SFA in 2012 to provide Sevco with a place in the First Division after Rangers went into liquidation.

While other clubs refused to address the issue Hutton stood in front of the cameras and microphones to express his disgust at the stance taken by Stewart Regan.

On July 3, at Hampden Park the then Raith chairman became a national figure saying: “It is not an SFL issue, we’ve been lumbered with this. There are rules we feel they should be followed. They [newco Rangers] should apply for the Third Division.

“[We are being] bullied, railroaded and lied to. We are being lied to by the Scottish FA and the SPL. We are being threatened and bullied. It is not football as I know it.

“It was a ridiculous document which came out last week whereby the threat was there that if you don’t vote for an acceptance into the First Division, a breakaway SPL2 will come along and those who didn’t vote wouldn’t be invited.

“What kind of game are we running here? It is corrupt.”

No disciplinary action was taken against Hutton for his comments.

Celtic’s Champions League second round second leg qualifiers will be played on July 21/22 meaning that it will be a development side that travels to Fife.

Ronny Deila is likely to keep his side at home for pre-season training with all energies focussed on getting through three qualifying rounds to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

Announcing the friendly the Raith website stated: “The Board of Directors announces that, in honour of our former Chairman and bastion of Scottish ‘sporting integrity’, it has agreed that we shall name our Main Stand at Stark’s Park the Turnbull Hutton Stand.

“Turnbull served the club as a director since 2000, and more recently as Chairman until he stepped down in late 2014 for health reasons. He sadly passed away last month, at the age of 68.

“We are delighted to confirm that the formal naming ceremony for the Turnbull Hutton Stand will take place on Wednesday 22 July when we face a strong Celtic XI in a pre season friendly, with a 7.45pm kick off. We are indebted to Celtic FC for agreeing to mark the occasion by playing us at Stark’s Park in our final match before the new season begins in earnest.”

Ray McKinnon, the former Aberdeen and Dundee United midfielder, has replaced Grant Murray as Raith manager.
