Paul McMullanThe SFA moved into the direct broadcasting market to screen Thursday’s Little Big Shots Youth Cup Final online.

With the BBC under fire for their third rate treatment of the Scottish game the possibilities of online broadcasting are opening up new opportunities for the game.

Rather than wait till late on Sunday night to show highlights, sometimes from games played 48 hours earlier, the football authorities could put together their own highlights packages for a 9pm Saturday night slot that would certainly attract sponsors and give the game a truly free market to build on.

Live coverage would also be available giving sponsors the chance to reach out to an audience that isn’t hindered by geographical boundaries and subscription issues. A paid for service could also be made available that would provide a very accurate measure of the interest in Scottish football.

Thursday night’s coverage from Hampden seemed to be well received with little mention of streaming problems as Celtic’s u-20 side turned on the style to take the trophy.

The space provided by the Hampden pitch was exploited to the full as Celtic’s passing game was matched by some clinical finishing showcased by a hat-trick from Aidan Nesbitt.

Each strike by the teenager was worthy of comment as he matched his trickery on the wing with top drawer finishing.

After proving his worth at Hampden it could be that Nesbitt’s career is enjoyed online more than on television as football broadcasting moves into a new era freed from the shackles of the past.
