Lewis ToshneyLewis Toshney has signed for Raith Rovers.

Last season the defender joined Ross County in September before switching to Cowdenbeath in January.

With the benefit of a full pre-season at Starks Park the 23-year-old will be hopeful of recapturing the form that earned him Scotland caps at u-17, u-19 and u-21 level.

Toshney made just one first team appearance for Celtic, as a substitute away to Aberdeen in January 2011. During that season he formed a formidable central defensive partnership with Matty Hughes as Celtic won the u-18 double.

The following season he had an impressive loan spell at Kilmarnock where the disappointment in missing out on a League Cup Final win was compensated for by helping the Ayrshire side to a 1-0 win at Ibrox in the first match played by Ally McCoist’s side after going into administration.

Toshney won’t have to wait too long before coming up against Celtic with the hoops travelling through to Fife on July 22 for the naming of the Turnbull Hutton Stand. That fixture might test the emotions of the Lochee based Toshney family.

Raith finished last season comfortably in mid-table and enjoyed an impressive Scottish Cup win over Sevco at Ibrox.

Despite that showing manager Grant Murray was axed before the final match of the season with Ray McKinnon coming in from Brechin City as Murray’s replacement.

After switching to Starks Park the former Dundee United midfielder said: “I’m delighted and excited, and I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead.

Everything was agreed last week, the terms and conditions, but there was a wee delay with St Mirren. There was nothing to it, really. I was committed to the interview prior to agreeing terms with Raith and I followed through with the interview, and I am now the Raith Rovers manager. I am delighted and excited about that.”
