Joe Chalmers MotherwellAfter a lifetime at Celtic Joe Chalmers clocked out for the last time and signed for Motherwell.

A hip injury in the spring of 2013 effectively halted his progress after coming through the Academy ranks from the age of 10.

As a member of Celtic’s talented 94 group Chalmers was a regular in the Scotland youth set up and stepped up with ease into the u-19 side that strolled to the double in 2011/12 alongside Marcus Fraser, John Herron, Mikey Miller and Paul George.

The following season he featured in three first team matches while winning another youth double with the age group upped to u-20’s.

In January 2014 he went on loan to Falkirk where he made 10 appearances but the current season was virtually a write off although he did feature in the closing games of the season, scoring a penalty against Kilmarnock at Lennoxtown.

After signing for Motherwell today he told the club website: “I’m delighted to sign for Motherwell and cannot wait to get started. I’ve been in a few times and trained with the lads and it’s a really good group.

“The manager has also been excellent with me and was a huge reason why I wanted to come and play here.”

Motherwell boss Ian Baraclough added: “He’s a young player with fantastic potential who we’ve tracked for some time.

He’s versatile, mobile with a good range of passing and will add competition in numerous positions in defence.

He’s got a good pedigree having came through the Academy and played for Celtic’s first team and had significant youth International experience. I am really looking forward to working with him over the next few years.”

Chalmers played mainly at left-back where his range of passing and crossing was best utilised.
