WarburtonMark Warburton remains hopeful of signing veteran midfielder John Eustace.

The 35-year-old jetted into Glasgow on Tuesday but despite being shown around the state-of-the-art Murray Park and Ibrox Stadium returned south without signing up for the Warburton revolution.

Pre-season training starts today with just two new signings, Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan for the former Brentford boss to work with.

Sevco have still to set up a single pre-season fixture and kick off the new season in four weeks with the first round of the Petrofac Training Cup.

Explaining the situation with Eustace, Warbo told TalkSport: “We are making good progress. It is about both parties coming together and meeting all the relevant points. He is one of those players that are few and far between and has the experience to link it all together.

“Off the pitch, he can add that value and discipline to the squad and lead by example. We are working hard and hope it can all come together.”

Explaining his interest in the journeyman midfielder Warbo said: “John’s a player I know very well. I worked with him at Watford. He is an outstanding professional.

“I’ll have a chat with John and his representatives and we’ll see what happens. I know he’s 35, but do you remember when Davie Weir came to Rangers? What was he, 35, 36? And he didn’t too badly did he?”

In 2007 Weir joined a squad full of players lured to Ibrox by EBT’s, in 2015 that incentive is no longer available to the former city trader.
