Dave King Three months after offering to lead Scottish football into a golden era Paul Murray is tapping up Scott Allan of Hibs.

The silver haired borders banker was a director of Rangers until a year before the club was placed in liquidation but seems to have learned nothing from the experience.

Using the same smugness that his namesake Dave was famed for the Ibrox director told The Times newspaper how much he admired the Hibs midfielder. Murray also spoke about the profile of player required by the Championship promotion chasers but of course never linked the two together.

Without any hint at irony, discussing Allan, the Sevco director told The Times: “He’s obviously under contract with someone else so we can’t talk about him in too much detail but we should be seeking to identify players to our team and our squad and bring them in and add further value to them through what we do here.

It’s like manufacturing where you take the raw material in, add value to it and get a finished product.

Scott Allan is an example of a player I personally think is a very good player. His profile is right as a young guy with a lot of potential. He has played quite a lot of football.”

With season ticket sales slow and Dave King still to declare his investment plan Mark Warburton has only been able to sign two players since taking over as manager.

Marquee signings are no longer available, just like EBT schemes and limitless overdrafts from Bank of Scotland, leaving the Ibrox side to operate on the same basis as the other teams in The Championship.

Murray has still to invest in Sevco but having buddied up with Mr King believes that he has the know how to salvage Scottish football.

Speaking the day after being voted onto the company board by shareholders Murray told the BBC: “I believe Rangers are the biggest club in Scotland and I think what comes with that is a responsibility to lead Scottish football.

I’m 50 years of age now and in my lifetime, and before that, Rangers very much led Scottish football in terms of the governance and the strategy, obviously along with Celtic and other clubs, and in the last 15-20 years that’s been gradually declining and we need to get back to that way of thinking.

A lot of people have got strong views on what happened to Rangers and that’s fine, and I’ve got strong views as well, but we need to move forward now and grasp the situation and lead Scottish football.

In terms of practical things it’s rejoining some of the committees that determine what’s happening in the game, participating in discussions about the strategy of the game, these are things we’ve got to be involved in as we are the biggest club in Scotland in my view.”

Allan was voted Championship Player-of-the-Year last season and has 12 months left on his Hibs contract.
