Steve BruceMan of many clubs Eric Black has quit Wigan to become first team coach at Rotherham.

The former Aberdeen striker has had two short spells in management at Motherwell and Coventry but has never been short of offers on the training ground.

Jock Brown brought Black in as Celtic’s Head of Youth in 1997 but he quickly stepped up to serve as assistant manager to Jo Venglos and John Barnes.

Celtic’s 2000 Scottish Cup defeat from Inverness Caley Thistle brought Barnes’ brief spell to an end with Black and Terry McDermott also axed alongside the former Liverpool winger.

After a short spell working as an agent Black was given the job of managing Motherwell in October 2001 but resigned soon afterwards as the Fir Park club went into administration.

That stint was Black’s last job in Scotland as he moved south to a variety of clubs where he teamed up with Steve Bruce at Birmingham, Wigan and Sunderland after a brief spell in charge of Coventry City before being replaced by Peter Reid.

Over the last few seasons Black has been involved at Blackburn, Blackpool and Wigan with his Championship know how appealing to Stevie Evans as he attempts to build on Rotherham escaping the drop last season.

Yesterday Evans said: “He has a wealth of experience and knowledge as a coach from a career spanning over 20 years and will have a major part to play at Rotherham going forward.”

Rotherham start the new season at home to MK Dons on August 2.
