paul lawsonFormer Celt Paul Lawson has explained why he has quit full-time football to join Formartine United in the Highland League.

The 31-year-old was released by Motherwell at the end of last season after joining the Lanarkshire side on a Bosman deal two years earlier.

Life under Stuart McCall and Ian Baraclough didn’t work out as he had hoped forcing Lawson to think outside of football for his next move.

The security of life on civy street is becoming more and more attractive compared to chasing 10 month contracts and the tensions involved in football.

A decade after playing for Rainer Bonhof’s Scotland u-21 team alongside Shaun Maloney and David Marshall Lawson had little difficulty in deciding to go part-time for the club based between Aberdeen and Peterhead.

I’m at the stage in my career that I need to consider what my options out with football,” he told the Formartine website.

Having secured a job in Aberdeen there really was little to think about when Formartine came along with the offer of a contract. I have been fortunate to have picked up some silverware during my career at Ross County and I’d like to think I can continue that with Formartine United!”

Lawson was a regular first team substitute under Gordon Strachan during the 2005/06 season but was released in 2007 after loan spells at St Mirren and St Johnstone.

Callum Bagshaw, a regular in Celtic’s double winning youth side’s of 2010/11 and 2011/12 is already on the books of Formartine United.
