Calvin MillerA youthful Celtic XI beat Spanish side Real Gardia 5-0 tonight.

The match took place at the Oliva Nova training complex near Valencia where the Celtic squad has been based for the last eight days.

Calvin Miller scored twice with Regan Hendry, Fiacre Kelleher and Innes Murray netting against their highly rated Spanish opponents.

Coaches Stevie Frail and Tommy McIntyre have a squad of 18 with them with the bulk of the players coming from last season’s u-17 side that finished the season by lifting the Glasgow Cup at Hampden.

With the bulk of last season’s development squad expected to go out on loan this season Celtic are likely to use a very youthful squad in the Development League backed up by first team players needing game time.

Ahead of tonight’s match Frail told the club website: “The players will be looking forward to the game. The training has been hard work and they will want to play. They will be used to the facility where we will be playing as it’s where we have been training every day.

It’s against a local team who hopefully will be around the same age, though they might have a few older ones which will be a test. It’s a game they are all looking forward to getting involved in.

It’s a seven o’clock kick-off so the heat won’t be as intense. Playing games is what we are here for and what their whole pre-season is about, getting them up to that level of fitness going into matches.”

The squad will return at the weekend and continue their build up to the new season against Morton (July 13), Turriff United (July 18), Raith Rovers (July 21) and East Kilbride (July 25).
