whitewashRemember the Sunday papers? I do, I even used to work for one of them, they sent me from Sudova to Seville more than a decade ago but like Old Firm previews and phone tapping, Sunday papers are a dying breed.

As a kid I used to await the Sunday Mail being delivered, my dad also got The Observer for something to read, to find out what was happening in the world of Celtic and a look back at the Saturday match.

Through the seventies and eighties the Sunday papers were at the centre of the footballing week, a generation earlier men used to gather at certain central locations for the papers to be dispatched, folk would be eager to get their hands on the newsprint when vendors went round the pubs selling papers.

Like many things today’s generation get it all too easy, they get their Celtic news on a plate, a tablet, a phone, older supporters probably still use a PC or laptop.

The speed of delivery is incredible, alongside twitter and facebook there are a multitude of ways of finding out who Celtic are scouting, who they are signing, who is being sold, who had a stinker and who’s come on as a substitute for the u-17’s in a testimonial match against some junior football club.

Many moons ago I used to write up a reserve match report, describing the goals of Gerry Britton, the magic of Stevie Fulton or Davie Elliot, buy a stamp and stick it in the post to Kevin at the Celtic View. Changed days when a guy from Canada on a trip home to see family discusses your website towards the end of a Development League match against Hearts at Newtongrange as you prepare to click the publish button.

Today’s Celtic fans have never had it so good and the smart mind behind Celticnewsnow has stolen a march on his old fashioned printed rivals by feeding all the Celtic news into one app to make things even easier to consume.

Larsson MirrorOver the last three years there has been dramatic growth in the number of Celtic websites as supporters discover how straightforward it is to state their opinions, provide some news and most importantly share that information.

Rather than post on message boards fans have been discovering WordPress, creating their own sites, building up a following through social media and spreading their wings. Connecting with like minded supporters and sharing news and opinion.

With an apple and android app Celticnewsnow showcases the breaking and most popular items for hoops supporters taken from a wide cross section of sources.

There is no monopoly on supporter opinions with websites and blogs catering for varying tastes. Among the Celticnewsnow stable you will find the older newspaper titles sitting alongside more aligned sites, those that dare to use words like Liquidation and Sevco.

Celtic fans can chose their news, there are copycat sites that seem to publish constantly day and night, more thoughtful sites than scratch below the surface or take a historical perspective and all sorts that lie somewhere in-between.

The media future has many unanswered questions, the printed pound in advertising has been replaced by the digital penny as the market has been split up and diversified beyond belief. Newspaper groups go through digital editors on a quarterly basis trying to find out where their old market are now and seeking out the next generation of readers to entice advertisers on board.

All the while the independents are growing stronger, with 20,000 plus page-views on a good day, or 3,000 page-views in an hour the future is digital.

In twenty years time someone may be reading this again and ask ‘Dad, what was an app?’.
