Tony Watt Standard LiegeTony Watt continued his impressive start to the season with the opening goal in Charlton’s 4-1 win over Dagenham and Redbridge in the Capital One Cup.

Seven Championship sides lost out to lower division opposition but there was no danger of an upset at The Valley as Charlton booked their place in the second round of the competition.

A training ground dispute with a member of the coaching staff saw Watt relegated to the bench for the Championship opener against QPR on Saturday but after coming on to score and following that up with another strike last night Guy Luzon praised the striker.

Tony played well and showed a lot of commitment today,” the Charlton boss said. “When he comes with this attitude, he has the talent to score and have an influence on the game.”

Luzon added: “It was good for the club, good for the fans and good for the players.

We know there were a lot of Championship teams who were beaten by teams from lower division tonight, but we continue and it’s very important.

Our attitude was very good. We came with passion and killed the game after 30 minutes.

It could have been a very difficult game. In the cup, Chelsea lost to a team from the third division, and I heard that a lot of teams in the Championship lost tonight, so it shows that we prepared well and I’m happy with that.”

On Saturday Charlton travel to Derby County followed by another trip to the Midlands to play Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
