Toshney-IrvineNorth and south of the border former Celts dominated the headlines in the League Cup.

Kicking off the goal rush Jackson Irvine put Ross County in front of Inverness Caley Thistle in the 41st minute with a well placed header, three minutes into the second half Michael Gardyne extended the lead with County hanging on despite a late rally from the home side after Greg Tansey pulled a goal back.

After the game County boss Jim McIntyre said: “Hopefully we can now take the next stage by winning the semi and getting to the final. It’s been a long time since this club had a day out at Hampden and the record in the cups has not been great.

“We wanted to make sure this season that we tried to get to the latter stages and we have got to the semi-final now.”

Down the road at Cappielow Denny Johnstone put Morton into the lead against St Johnstone but Steven MacLean equalised from the penalty spot before goals from former Celtic Academy bhoy Michael O’Halloran and Chris Kane took the Perth side through.

O’Halloran scored in the last round, another 3-1 win over Sevco at Ibrox, with Tommy Wright delighted by his form.

The St Johnstone boss said: “I don’t think there are any Scottish players playing better than what he has been for the last couple of months.

“Since Michael came here he has done well but he is just getting better and better and long may it continue.

“I love working with him and he is an exciting talent and found an environment where he is enjoying is football.

“He is full of confidence and belief. There were three men round him for the goal and it is not luck, it is skill and he is an exciting player.”

In England Sheffield Wednesday pulled off the shock of the night with a 3-0 home win over Arsenal in front of 35,000 fans at Hillsbrough.

Ross Wallace opened the scoring as Glenn Loovens side eased their way past the Premiership front runners into the last eight of the Capital One Cup.
