green-twitterCeltic’s twitter feed was under attack tonight after the club issued a message of support for Ireland ahead of the Euro qualifier against Germany. Celtic also tweeted six messages of support for Scotland ahead of the match with Poland.

It didn’t take long for the abuse to flow with predictable replies from the easily offended at a message that would attract little attention in any other country.

Celtic’s Irish credentials need no explaining with former players Shay Given and Daryl Murphy in the starting XI chosen by former hoops manager Martin O’Neill. Former Celt’s Aiden McGeady and Robbie Keane are among the substitutes with O’Neill’s backroom staff including Steve Walford and Steve Guppy.

Ireland kicked off tonight’s match four points ahead of Scotland with the team finishing in third place behind Germany and Poland assured of a play-off spot for next summer’s final stages in France.

A win against Germany would ensure third place for the Irish while a defeat for Scotland against Poland would end the campaign for Gordon Strachan’s side. While both countries insisted that they would be concentrating on their own matches news flashes between Glasgow and Dublin are bound to fly throughout the 90 minutes. Eleven months ago Scotland defeated Ireland at Celtic Park with the two teams drawing in the return match at the Aviva Stadium in June.

Up until the last batch of fixtures it seemed certain that Scotland would finish above the Irish but defeats against Georgia and Germany handed the initiative to the Irish who took full points from Gibraltar and Germany.

UPDATE Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Poland in the third minute.

Delighted for the Republic of Ireland, proud of my Irish routes. Disappointed for Scotland though, they are a bit like Celtic in a not so good way.
