Loch Lomond FestivalScotland’s u-17 squad face a long wait to discover if they will progress to the next stage of the European Championships.

Celtic’s Wallace Duffy opened the scoring against Italy yesterday but the match finished 1-1 leaving Scotland in third place on account of losing out to hosts Bulgaria 2-0 in the head-to-head clash.

Scotland finished in third place with four points and will have to wait until the 13 groups are completed to see if they can get one of five places for teams that came in third in their group.

In their opening match Scotland beat Macedonia 3-0 with Celtic’s Shaun Bowers and Broque Watson among the scorers. Jack Aitchison and Aidan McAdams were also involved with Lewis Bell missing out through injury.

At u-19 level Kieran Tierney, Aidan Nesbit, Jack Breslin, Mark Hill and Joe Thomson have been named in the Scotland u-19 side for next months Euro qualifiers in Ireland.

Scotland face Latvia (November 13 in Athlone), Slovenia (November 15 in Limerick) and finish up against Ireland (November 18 in Limerick). Celtic keeper Colin McCabe is expected to be in the Ireland squad.

Before they head off on international duty Celtic’s u-19 side travel to Hungary to take on the Puskas Academy in the UEFA Youth League. The first leg takes place on November 4 with the return match at Livingston on November 20.

If Celtic can see off the Hungarian champions they will face a one off tie against one of the runners-up from the Champions League group phase with the winners of that match then playing a group winner for a place in the last eight of the tournament.

Typical of UEFA Scotland finished 3rd level on points with Bulgaria but ahead on Goal difference…but lost out on 2nd place due to the head to head fixtures taking preference over goal difference !

Good effort by those involved though, tremendous experience for all concerned.
