No one needs to spell out the dangers of his position to Neil Lennon.

A year after taking over as manager of Bolton Wanderers the club are anchored at the bottom of The Championship with just one league win to their name.

Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Reading came a few days after financial adviser Trevor Birch was appointed to broker a takeover with current owner Eddie Davies prepared to write off £185m of personal guarantees if the the right people show that they will invest.

Eight Championship clubs have already changed manager with Lennon realistic about what a change of ownership could mean.

“What might happen is that investors might want to make a change – I have to be realistic about that,” he told the Bolton News.

“Results haven’t been good and the buck stops with the manager but it needs investment or the club will run out of money, possibly, and you don’t want a situation like that.

“Trevor is in to get investment as quickly as possible. If you’ve got an Abramovich it might last 15 minutes but it could take a matter of weeks.”

Lennon added: “We’ve got plenty of younger players in the squad, it’s the senior players who I’m looking to work with and get more from to manage us through this period. It has been a trying time.

We kept the team up last year and we’re hoping we can do it again but I need players to take their chances and not make silly mistakes at the back.

We will work with the players this week and hopefully turn things around.”
