Shaun MaloneyShaun Maloney scored his first goal for Hull City as Steve Bruce’s side drew 1-1 at Bristol City on Saturday.

The former Celtic forward had a brief spell in the MLS with Chicago Fire before returning to England during the summer transfer window.

Saturday’s draw keeps Hull in top spot but with the top five clubs separated by just four points every game is critical in the chase for the £150m guarantee that comes with a place in next season’s Premier League.

I think we had to be pleased with a point in the end,” Maloney told the Hull website. “Bristol City were maybe the better side in the first half, but then we shaded it in the last half-hour so I think we have to be pleased to take a point having gone behind away from home.

It was pleasing to get my first goal in Hull colours. When you come on from the bench, all you want to do is add something to the team and thankfully I managed to do that today.

The team has been on such a good run of late and I know I have to be patient. When the manager puts you on you want to make an impact so it was pleasing to do that. It was the ideal scenario as far as today was concerned.

In terms of the goal, the ball came forward from Allan McGregor and we all know how good Elmo is in the air. I gambled on that and I think Mo Diame got a flick on it, too. I was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and at that point you’re hoping he makes the decision for you. He didn’t, so I had to pick a spot and I managed to put it away.”

Brighton, including Beram Kayal, joined Hull on 35 points thanks to a 1-1 draw yesterday away to Burnley who are one of three clubs on 33 points.
