celtic hjk helsinkiCeltic’s u-19 side suffered the agony of losing a last minute goal to go down 1-0 away to the Puskas Academy in the first leg of their UEFA Youth League second round tie.

Tommy McIntyre’s side now require to turn the tie around in three weeks time at Livingston to progress through to face one of the runners-up from the Champions League groups.

After firing in five goals without replay away to HJK Helsinki in the previous round the Hungarian champions presented a much tougher test.

There was little between the sides during the first half with Aidan Nesbitt being closely marked after scoring a hat-trick in the 5-0 away win against HJK Helsinki in the previous round.

That pattern continued after the break with Celtic reduced to ten men after Joe Thomson was red carded in the 84th minute. In the final minute Alex Damasdi shot past Colin McCabe for the only goal of the game.

The winning teams from this round will be drawn against the eight second placed teams from the Champions League groups, the winners of those matches will then play a Champions League group winner for a place in the last eight of the Youth League.

Livingston will host the return leg on November 25.

On Sunday Celtic return to domestic action, taking on Hamilton Accies in the second round of the SFA Youth Cup with the match kicking off at 1.30pm at New Douglas Park.
