michael ohalloranCeltic’s u-17 side are back in action tomorrow night when they take on St Mirren at the St Mirren Training Complex, kick off 7.30pm.

Michael O’Halloran’s side have been starved of action through the winter with last week’s 2-0 win at Motherwell their third league match in three months.

Ciaran Diver and Keiran Campbell scored in each half with Motherwell providing a stern test of Aidan McAdams and his new look defence.

Stevie Welsh came into the side to partner Wallace Duffy in the centre of defence with Robbie Deas deployed at left back.

Up front Diver and 15-year-old Jack Aitchison teamed up effectively with O’Halloran happy to switch the formation to bring out the best in the players.

Teams have watched us playing 4-2-3-1 but with the players we had available we decided to go with something different,” the Celtic coach explained.

Ciaran Diver gives us a bit of height and Jack Aitchison was busy round about him. We had the players to suit that formation and it worked well.

At the back we had to make a couple of changes and the boys that came in did well.

Stephen Welsh was excellent in central defence, Robbie Deas is calm on the ball and did well at left back. Robbie is an u-16 but we look on the 16s and 17s as one squad and can call on any of them.”

O’Halloran added: “We played well against a good Motherwell side that have taken some good scalps this season.

Over the last few weeks we’ve only really managed a few bounce games between the players but they were sharp and played well.

Considering that we hadn’t had a game for a month I was pleased with the result and the performance, we put a lot into the match.”

Tonight Celtic face Aberdeen in the Development League at Brechin with the match kicking off at 6pm. Celtic are currently level with Hamilton Accies at the top of the table with four games in hand having won 13 and drawn one of their 14 matches.

UPDATE: Aberdeen v Celtic postponed due to waterlogged pitch.
