Bolton Wanderers - Neil Lennon Press ConferenceNeil Lennon has revealed that disciplinary matters were behind Gary Madine’s absence from last night’s 1-0 defeat at Birmingham.

The defeat leaves Bolton seven points away from safety with Lennon admitting that there was an element of cutting his nose off to spite his face in the decision to leave out the striker who has scored five goals in the Championship.

Asked if Madine had been axed for disciplinary reasons Lennon admitted: “That’s true. You have to set certain standards as a manager and I’m pretty fair with the players but there are some things which you can’t tolerate and you have to put a marker down and that’s what I’ve done.

“It was at the weekend. I’m not going to go into it, it’s been dealt with internally. It’s up to Gary, the ball is in his court. He has to have a change in his thinking. There are things I will put up with and there are things I just can’t, otherwise you’ll have anarchy on your hands.

“It’s a hard decision to make because sometimes you feel you’re cutting your nose off to spite your face but I won’t tolerate that sort of behaviour from anyone. These things pass and he may come into contention for the weekend.

“There has to be a certain level of discipline. There’s a line to be drawn.”

Bolton are hopeful of coming out of administration thanks to a £7.5m bid from a consortium led by Dean Holdsworth with Lennon knowing what the immediate priority is.

What we need to do is get the (transfer) embargo lifted and get some players in to bolster the squad,” the former Celtic boss explained. “It’s wafer thin at the moment. We do need a bit of strength in depth, it’s something we’ve lacked for a while. It (the takeover) has not gone through yet so once it does we’ll know what position we’re in.”
