Leigh Griffiths has hit out at the sick abuse he has been subjected to on twitter.

The Celtic striker has over 65,000 followers on the social media network and regularly connects with supporters, happy to promote various good causes and charity events.

With his Hibs supporting credentials and goalscoring achievements for Celtic Griffiths is often the target of banter but tonight the depths of abuse were plunged.

In a message tonight the Celtic striker tweeted: “I’m all for banter with fans on twitter, I get praise when it’s due, and criticism when it’s due, but why do people feel the need to wish bad things to happen to my kids?

I’m doing my job at the end of the day, and if people don’t like that fine. But please don’t wish things like my kids to die please, because it really does hurt. They don’t have anything to do with my job. I go to work, come home, and be a family man. I love my 4 kids with everything I have, and what I do I do for them.”

Griffiths re-tweeted the sick messages that he received and was instantly given support from others disgusted by the contents.

With various police task forces constantly reviewing social media sites the culprits are bound to be brought to justice followed quickly by the usual predictable excuses.

Abuse and attacks like tonight on the footballer will inevitably lead to calls for greater control of social networks with more celebrities deciding that it’s no longer worthwhile reaching out to followers and supporters.
