Aidan NesbittAlan Archibald couldn’t believe his luck when he signed Aidan Nesbitt for Partick Thistle last night.

Anyone with a passing interest in youth football will be well aware of the young Celt’s ability to play in any attacking role, left or right flank as well as find goals playing as a striker.

After signing off last season with a hat-trick in the final of the SFA Youth Cup against Sevco at Hampden Nesbitt opened the new season in front of Archibald by scoring twice in a 3-0 win over Thistle at Cappielow.

Last night Archibald said: “Aidan is one of the best young prospects in Scottish football so we are delighted to get him and hopefully he’ll fulfil his full potential with us.

Celtic know I’ve always been a big admirer of the boy and I enquired at start of the window to see what might be happening. Then in the last few weeks he fell down the pecking order obviously with Ryan Christie coming back and Scott Allan plus a few others ahead of him, so they thought it was a good idea to get him out on loan and we’re delighted it’s to us.

We didn’t have to do anything in particular to convince Celtic it should be us. I think the way we’ve played against them and the style we like to play was enough for them.

He knows he’ll need to fight for his place, Ronny was fine with that, so he comes under no assurance that he’s definitely going to play. He’ll have to fight for his place like the rest of them.”

After that win over Thistle Stevie Frail said: “We know Aidan is a good player, he’s used to playing out wide but maybe the role inside behind the striker suits him better.

At half time we took Luke Donnelly off and put Aidan into that area, he is really effective in there. He is a good finisher with a real eye for goal.

The manager has got a lot of quality to pick from but Aidan trains every day with the first team. It can only help his development training and playing alongside, Forrest, Mackay-Steven, Commons and all the great midfielders at the club.

He can’t fail to learn, he is young and has got plenty of time. He wants to get involved as quickly as he can but it’s important that we don’t push him too far too fast. He’ll get there in his own time, he trains alongside quality every day and is developing fast.”
