BILLY MCNEILL EUROPEAN CUPSome fantastic new footage has emerged from the 1967 European Cup Final- captured by a supporter in the stadium using a cine camera.

The old 8mm footage was used sparingly in those days to capture special family moments such as weddings and holidays.

Cine cameras were as rare as passports in the sixties with the trip to Lisbon the first foreign travel for most fans as 10,000 supporters made the trip by every mode of transport to see Billy McNeill lift the Big Cup- the most celebrated event in Celtic’s history.

The clip has now been uploaded onto You Tube giving current supporters an insight into the magical day that has been handed down from generation to generation with next year’s 50th anniversary certain to see a number of events held in recognition.

Like Seville in 13 years ago the pilgrimage of the supporters was just as big a story with Pat and Mary O’Rourke’s journey typical of many.

The You Tube clip shows supporters before and after the match, marching to the stadium and the iconic moment when big Billy lifted the cup and raised it towards the Celtic support.

Before Christmas a statue of that moment was unveiled by McNeill outside Celtic Park with the video clip adding another dimension to a story that no supporter will ever tire of hearing.

The colour coverage recalls the flavour of the time, an age when replica tops were unknown with fans showing their support through tammies or traditional old school dark green scarves rather than the modern bar scarf or half and half scarves that are a feature of the modern game.
