Loch Lomond FestivalJack Aitchison was the hero as Scotland’s u-17 side booked their place in the finals of the European Championships in Azerbaijan with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland today.

The 16-year-old scored just after half time and although the Swiss equalised to earn a draw a point was enough to take Scotland through on the head-to-head against the Czech Republic who defeated group winners Denmark 3-2.

Scotland had opened up with a 4-0 defeat from Denmark but bounced back by beating the Czech Republic 2-0 to earn a place in the last 16.

In today’s final group match in the Czech Republic Nedim Bajtami equalised in the 72nd minute for Switzerland but Celtic keeper Aidan McAdams held firm to ensure the point that kept Scotland in second place despite an inferior goal difference to the host nation.

Speaking afterwards Scotland coach Scott Gemmill said: β€œIt’s a fantastic feeling. We came into the match knowing a win would guarantee qualification so that was our objective. We couldn’t rely on the other match going our way.

“We weren’t sure if the draw was enough and we were pushing for the win at the end. We had a three versus one situation in the last minute and the referee blew for full-time. The boys were unhappy and complaining to the referee when someone shouted ‘Czech Republic have scored!’

“It was still unclear if that was enough but when we received official confirmation everything went a bit crazy!”

As well as Aitchison and McAdams Celtic midfielder Broque Watson was in the squad with Lewis Bell, Wallace Duffy and Shaun Bowers involved in the qualifying round earlier in the season.
