Hearts fansAmong the many memories of that incredible day 30 years ago there is one that stands out very clearly for Albert Kidd.

Having justified his managers decision to put him on the bench, then send him on as a substitute Kidd was feeling fairly pleased with himself.

In the away dressing room Sandy Jardine and Alex MacDonald were in the depths of despair- Celtic had won the league. Outside Wallace Mercer was staging a press conference.

Ninety miles away in Paisley it was bedlam as the Celtic support saluted the league winners and a previously little known footballer from Dundee.

The home dressing room at Dens Park was a little different as Kidd recalled for an interview in The Scotsman on Saturday.

There’s one thing that sticks in my mind,” Kidd said. “When I came into the dressing room at the end I was feeling rosy pink about myself, I was sitting where I normally sit. And Archie was sitting right across from me. He didn’t normally come into the dressing-room, but he was there then. He looks at me and says: ‘f**k’s sake wee man’.

I was saying to myself: is that a compliment or what is he actually saying? “I always wondered about that, still do: what did he mean? Is he ?disappointed? I mean, Archie swayed towards Rangers. I am not even sure he was that happy. I have a lot of time for Archie. But I was never sure what he meant.”

Knox quit Dundee shortly afterwards to join Alex Ferguson as assistant manager at Aberdeen and was expected to take over once Ferguson left the club.

Once Ferguson took over Knox quit Aberdeen to go to Old Trafford before returning to Scotland as a number two to Walter Smith at Rangers (IL).
