Stokes hairCELTIC won the Scottish Cup today as Anthony Stokes inspired Hibs to a 3-2 victory over Sevco at Hampden.

After dropping out of the picture at Parkhead Stokes was sent on loan to Hibs in January with a view to helping their promotion bid, that prospect ended at Falkirk in midweek but after a 114 year winning the Scottish Cup will more than compensate for that disappointment.

The Irishman tortured the Ibrox side all afternoon, scoring twice, then earning the corner that David Gray scored the stoppage time winner from.

Stokes was in inspired form from the third minute when he opened the scoring, putting in an incredible performance that new Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers couldn’t fail to take notice of.

Hibs failed to build on that opener with Sevco looking likely winners when Kenny Miller and Andy Halliday netted either side of half time.

It looked all set for another chapter of agony for the Edinburgh side but in the 70th minute Liam Henderson was sent on to replace Liam Fontaine.

With ten minutes left to play Henderson’s corner was headed home by Stokes at the front post, 12 minutes later it was skipper Gray that headed home Henderson’s corner to bring a 114 year hoodoo to an end.

With Stubbs in the dugout, Henderson and Stokes were joined by former Celts Dylan McGeouch and James Keetings on the park there was a very strong Celtic connection to the triumph.

The win takes Hibs into next season’s Europa League while Manager of the Year Mark Warburton has the consolation of spending Dave King’s £30m transfer warchest as he prepares for his first ever campaign in top flight football.
