With three weeks till his competitive debut as Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is taking his time to assess the squad that he inherited from Ronny Deila.

Quality rather than quantity, or ‘projects’, will be the transfer priority with the early target being a return to the Champions League group phase with the finance and prestige that it brings.

The Irishman has been in the job for a full month and started to see his squad in pre-season training this week as the countdown begins towards the serious business.

Rodgers has still to make his first signing but with a vast squad of first team players to view is making the most of the pre-season fitness work.

I think at this moment in time it’s about developing the players’ fitness,” the hoops boss admitted. “Of course there’s a lot of work that needs to go into the squad but at this moment in time, the players that are back in are working on their fitness and that’s key for this period of the season.

Then we’ll be looking, over the course of the coming weeks, to evaluate it that bit more and looking to impose our ideas more into the group.

We’re working on trying to bring one or two in but the idea is quality. That’s what we’re looking for.

“You have to respect that the current players are the Premiership champions and if we can add to that and help them with one or two players then that would bode well for us.

“In 12 weeks the Champions League group stages start and the most important thing for us is to be in it. That will be with the current players and hopefully one or two that can help them get there.”
