Burton Albion have paid a club record fee to sign Jackson Irvine from Ross County.

The young Australian left Celtic a year ago and enjoyed an outstanding season with the Dingwall side picking up the man-of-the-match award during the League Cup Final win over Hibs.

Celtic will be due a slice of the ‘undisclosed fee’ with Irvine going straight in to the Burton squad for today’s friendly against Stoke City.

Announcing the deal Nigel Clough told the Burton website: “He’s an Australian international who has got good experience in Scotland with Celtic and most recently Ross County.

He’s still relatively young but he’s one that we think can still improve with us and he wants a chance to play in England.”

Irvine said: “I couldn’t be happier that the deal has gone through and it’s great timing and I’m now ready to focus on the football.

“When I first heard of the interest it was very flattering and it was a deal I wanted to make happen if possible. It has taken a bit of time but now it’s gone through I’m so excited to be a part of it here, playing in the Championship and testing myself against that calibre of team.”

Burton won promotion to The Championship last season and will be mixing it with Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest and others in the new season.

Irvine was largely overlooked at home in Melbourne but after a trial with Celtic his career took off although first team chances were extremely limited forcing him out on loan to Kilmarnock and Ross County.
