Confirmation that Scott Sinclair is a signing target was given a lukewarm welcome by Celtic fans.

The 27-year-old has had a nomadic career since leaving Swansea for Manchester City but that doesn’t seem to have deterred Brendan Rodgers.

Speculation over bids being rejected have been rife for around a month as Rodgers tries to impose his own stamp on a squad that is largely inherited from Ronny Deila.

Last season Sinclair started in 19 and made eight substitute appearances as Aston Villa sunk out of the Premier League with barely a struggle.

Sinclair was signed by Tim Sherwood for £2.5m but it seems as if Villa are looking to double their money but it’s highly unlikely that Celtic will be going in at that level.

The transfer fee seems all important in this saga with Celtic not rushing in to match the asking price since there is little sign of other clubs ready to turn the process into an auction.

Summing up the feelings of many Celtic fans Tyneside No 1 commented on the story saying: “I will trust Brendan Rodgers on this one , let him build a team, he has only spent 500k so far, Although we can’t get any marquee signings he is getting players in who people will want to see, kids will want the players names on their back, if he gets us into the CL that is a further 20m.”

Backing up that view @trmo67 tweeted: “ @videocelts if the manager is keen then we should try and get the deal done. Got to back the manager.”

Taking the view of the Celtic money men @yankee10570 tweeted: “@videocelts getting a bit pricey. Just put that money toward keeping Paddy permanently.”

Thinking along similar lines @brianboru67 added: “ @videocelts Don’t break the bank for him.”

Linking both viewpoints BMC1888brian tweeted: @videocelts he knows what he is capable of and how he’ll fit in.. £3m tops imo.”

With Rodgers keen on the player but the price tag an obstacle it looks like there is still a lot of mileage in this transfer tale.

Against Astana on Wednesday night Moussa Dembele is likely to be the only Rodgers signing in the starting XI.

If Celtic qualify for the final play-off round Rodgers will surely be expecting the transfer pace to be stepped up- having named Sinclair as a target it’s likely that the Villa man will be on his way to Celtic at some point in August.
