Despite watching his side thrash Stranraer 3-0 at Ibrox last night Mark Warburton launched another attack on the Betfred League Cup.

Since their opening day win over Motherwell at Fir Park Sevco have enjoyed three wins in seven days over Annan, East Stirling and Stranraer rattling in an impressive nine goals without reply.

Most managers would be happy with that sort of gentle introduction to competitive action but the whinging former city trader views things completely differently.

My opinion hasn’t changed, it is still four games in nine days,” Warbo scowled. “ I think that is inappropriate but it is what it is, we had to deal with it.

We’ve come through the four games injury free, which is always good news, and we’ve got better with every game.

Energy levels were good, and there was a good intensity for longer tonight.

I felt we got sloppy after 75 minutes, but we’ve still got ten days to go until the start of the league season. So we’re in a good place.”

Outside of Ibrox the revamped League Cup has been well received by most clubs and managers as their squads get some meaningful action under their belt in the build up to the league season.

Taking drawn matches to a penalty shoot out for a bonus point has added interest to every match with qualification still achievable for half of the clubs as they prepare for the closing fixtures this week.

Each of the group winners plus four runners up will join Celtic, Hearts, Aberdeen and Hibs in a straight knock out phase with the final played at Hampden in November.
