Mark Warburton has dismissed speculation that Robin van Persie is on his way to Ibrox.

Overnight rumours claimed that Sevco, who had a going concern warning served with their last audited accounts, were in the market for the unhappy Fenerbahce forward.

Some bookmakers slashed the odds on van Persie joining Sevco down to even money despite the stumbling block of weekly wages believed to be in the region of £240,000 per week.

In every area the story fails to stand up with the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker unlikely to be thrilled by the prospect of playing alongside Martyn Waghorn and Kenny Miller.

“I wonder what the first question will be,” the former city trader smiled as he sat down to a media conference to preview a friendly against Burnley.

“I have no idea where the rumour has emanated from. I woke up to a barrage of texts and missed calls, with apparently the deal done.

“Everybody knew about it apart from the people at Rangers Football Club. Out of our pay league I think is a fair comment.

“He’s an unbelievably talented player but absolutely nothing in it whatsoever. I’m bemused to hear some of the stories, including betting being suspended.

“There is no truth in the story whatsoever.”

Since taking charge at Ibrox a year ago Warburton has still to pay out a transfer fee for any player with Bosman deals, free transfers and undisclosed fees the order of the day.

Since gaining promotion to the top flight nine new players have been signed up with Joey Barton on an alleged £25,000 a week deal the highest paid player at the club.

Stoke City, Middlebrough and West Ham have also been linked with van Persie who is likely to be looking for Champions League football if he moves on from his lucrative Fenerbahce deal.
