Neil Lennon was at a complete loss to explain Hibs 3-1 defeat to Queen of the South which killed off their Betfred Cup hopes.

Paul Hanlon put Lennon’s side in front midway through the first half but a second half collapse saw the visitors ease their way through to tonight’s quarter final draw.

Three weeks ago Lennon was praising his side after a battling 1-0 win away to Brondby that led to a ko on penalties but last night it was a different story.

We missed simple chances so we only have ourselves to blame,” the former Celtic boss stated. “The game should have been out of sight. It’s disappointing.

I’m annoyed at the way we defended, particularly in the last third of the game. We have to be better than that, to be more resolute. We weren’t ruthless enough.

Some players who have been excellent for us so far were off the boil a little bit. Does it pose questions to me about certain players going forward? Yeah.”

It was a night of surprises throughout the competition as three Premiership clubs were knocked out by lower league opponents.

Former Celt Jason Marr scored the only goal of the game as Alloa beat Inverness Caley Thistle, Aidan Nesbitt enjoyed a winning debut as Morton won 2-1 at Hamilton while Dundee United beat Partick Thistle 3-1 at Tannadice.

The quarter final draw will take place tonight after the Celtic v Motherwell tie.
