John Barnes briefly resumed his singing career as he celebrated Liverpool’s 4-0 win over Barcelona at Wembley.

The former Celtic boss became a trend-setter in 1988 when he broke all the rules regarding traditional football songs to record The Anfield Rap.

Two years later Barnes teamed up with New Order to record World in Motion for England’s Italia 90 World Cup squad.

Liverpool’s resounding win over Barcelona clearly brought out the best in the 52-year-old who burst into song as he returned to London after the match.

While the singing ability is still there Barnes found the transition from player to manager a bridge too far during a seven month stint at Celtic.

Newly appointed Director of Football, Kenny Dalglish brought Barnes in as Celtic manager in 1999 as the post Fergus McCann era kicked off at Celtic, sanctioned by new chief executive Allan MacDonald.

After an initial promising start the wheels came off the new regime when Henrik Larsson and Paul Lambert suffered serious injuries.

In January 2000 Rafael Sheidt was signed in a £5m deal but shortly after the winter break it was all over for Barnes following a 3-1 Scottish Cup defeat from Inverness Caley Thistle.

The best that can be said for the Barnes years at Celtic was that it hit rock bottom paving the way for Martin O’Neill and a new era of great success.

Barnes had one more stint in management with Tranmere Rovers in 2009, winning three out of 14 matches before being sacked.
