Newcastle United have signed Daryl Murphy from Ipswich Town on a two year contract.

The 33-year-old spent was signed by Celtic in 2010 but failed to make an impact, spending a season on loan at Ipswich before making a permanent move to the Championship side in May 2012.

Murphy had an outstanding season in 2014/15 scoring 27 times in the league to force his way back into Martin O’Neill’s squad ahead of a number of more celebrated names.

During the summer Murphy was an important part of the Ireland squad that reached the last 16 of the European Championships in France with Rafa Benitez pleased to have added some Championship know how to his squad.

The Newcastle boss told his club website: “Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

“He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend’s game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

“Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season.”

Despite spending time down the road at Sunderland Murphy can’t wait to get started in a black and white shirt.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it,” the striker said. “When I knew the Club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me so I’m happy it’s all done.

“I think with the squad of players that the Club have now, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”

In nine starts for Celtic Murphy scored three goals.
