Everton are close to completing the signing of Moussa Sissoko opening the door for James McCarthy to join Celtic on loan.

Despite strong interest from Spurs and Chelsea a number of respected sources are claiming that Sissoko has agreed on a deal to move to Goodison with Newcastle picking up a £30m fee for the French internationalist.

McCarthy has been at the centre of speculation over a move to Celtic since the hoops booked a place in the group stage of the Champions League.

An appearance in Glasgow over the weekend added petrol to the rumours despite interest from Leicester City and other English teams in signing the Ireland internationalist.

With Celtic’s interest out in the open it appears that the player has made it known that he won’t be signing for anyone else while there is an offer to go on loan to his boyhood heroes.

Everton appear to have reluctantly accepted that stance and are faced with the options of agreeing to the Celtic loan offer or having an unhappy player on the sidelines out of Ronald Koeman’s plans.

Adding to the drama is the 11pm deadline for transfers in England with the Scottish window closing an hour later.

If Celtic were able to complete the deal it would end a ten year chase for the midfielder who was introduced to the game in Castlemilk.

At the age of 15 he was playing first team football for Hamilton and despite transfers to Wigan and Everton the Irish internationalist has never made any secret of his love for Celtic.
