There was a definite sighting of James McCarthy in Mount Florida last night as transfer speculation reached a frenzy.

The midfielder missed Everton’s 1-0 win at home to Stoke City that maintained their unbeaten start to the season so there is nothing unusual in making the three hour drive up the M6 and M74 to spend time with his family before reporting for international duty.

Intrepid Celtic fan caught up with McCarthy in the shadow of Hampden Park and put the question on the lips of all Celtic fans: “Are you joining the hoops big man?”

Footballers rarely like to disappoint fans when they are out in public, even if McCarthy is keen to join Celtic there’s the small matter of the two clubs involved having to agree terms.

A permanent transfer would seem to be totally out of the question but a season long loan could bring both clubs round the negotiating table.

Without doubt McCarthy could be sold for £15-20m to any number of Premier League clubs but that comes with a number of risks.

Firstly it’s unlikely that the player would be interested in moving to a lesser club when he knows that Celtic are keen- with a mouth watering Champions League group thrown in for good measure.

Selling to a rival could backfire on Everton if McCarthy rediscovers the form of 18 months ago that had him linked to Arsenal and Spurs.

With thousands of rumour hungry Celtic fans around every movement of the Irish internationalist is certain to be relayed on social media.
