Gamboa seeks his chance

The potential signing of Cristian Gamboa shows the depth of homework involved in the modern game.

Last season the 26-year-old started just one game for West Brom- a League Cup defeat at Norwich- but with 47 caps for Costa Rica his footballing DNA is well established.

Brendan Rodgers was out of direct line management for the majority of last season but clearly knows enough about Gamboa to authorise a deal after setting up a medical.

In February speaking about his lack of first team action he said: “This is the way it is, in the end we have to listen to the gaffer (Tony Pullis), he has the last word.

He always tries to cheer up all the players, gets everybody fit and ready to play a match.

It’s 11 that play and 18 players including the bench, they cannot take everyone so you have to wait and when you get the chance you have to take it.

For me I have to keep working, football is like this. I not get beat easy so I will keep working until I get a chance. I will just wait until I get another chance in the Premier League or the FA Cup.”

With another batch of imported recruits arriving at West Brom during the summer it seems certain that Gamboa is moving to Celtic to get that chance.

Neither Saidy Janko or Mikel Lustig have convinced Rodgers at right-back- opening the door for the Costa Rican internationalist to walk straight into the Champions League.
