Peter Lawwell has promised Brendan Rodgers a Champions League windfall.

So far the new Celtic boss has spent less than £5m but added significantly to the wage bill by attracting Kolo Toure, Moussa Dembele, Scott Sinclair and Dorus de Vries to the club.

With Barcelona and Manchester City coming up before September is out Rodgers is looking to strengthen his squad with Lawwell promising to hand over the cash.

Celtic can expect to bring in around £30m from European football this season with the tills buzzing after being drawn against clubs from the big money leagues of England, Spain and Germany.

Speaking straight after the draw Lawwell said: “The money is a means to an end. The more money you get the more money gets invested. Every penny that comes in goes back in to the football team.

The more money you have the better the team tends to be. We have always reinvested everything that comes in because for us it’s all about the football.

We knew what we wanted to do before qualifying and we know what we want to do now.

The manager is looking to add to the squad and we will look to do that in the coming week.

I think there will be at least another one coming in the near future. For me it’s about the club, taking it forward and being on that platform. It’s all about football.”

James McCarthy has been the name most linked with joining Celtic but that is only likely to be on a loan deal with the transfer fee and associated wages far exceeding the money Celtic can expect to pick up from six Champions League ties.
