Neil Doncaster has refused to back UEFA’s fair coefficient initiative.

Yesterday UEFA announced plans to revamp the Champions League with club’s getting their own co-efficient rather than the national ranking one of the big changes.

Had that proposal been in place this season Celtic would have been in pot three rather than pot four having played two qualifiers rather than three.

In summary the changes mean Celtic are no longer held back by the performances of other Scottish clubs while teams such as Hearts, Motherwell and Ross County will get 20% of the national co-efficient rather than start from scratch.

It seems an ideal move but rather than welcome that change Doncaster is fearing further changes coming from UEFA.

The SPFL chief told his friends at the Daily Record: “There is still a lot to be worked through before we can comment fully on these changes, with UEFA stating that full details of the access list for both competitions will be finalised by the end of the year.

What we can say now is that, after lobbying hard for the retention of the Champions route for UEFA Champions League qualification, the SPFL is therefore pleased the Champions route has been protected as part of these changes.

“This alone is good news for each season’s Ladbrokes Premiership champion club and indeed for Scottish football as a whole.

However, we will monitor this issue and these changes very closely and pledge to continue to fight to protect the best interests of Scottish football in the wider European and global context.”

Any Scottish club playing in UEFA competitions for the first time will get 20% of the national co-efficient which has wholly generated by clubs that pay Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs in full while disclosing full contractual details of players to the SFA and SPFL.
