Why Leigh Griffiths should forget about international ‘duty’

|

Leigh Griffiths has been playing through a hamstring strain, yesterday, against Aberdeen, he was substituted for the third game running.

Under no circumstances should he be put at risk by reporting for international duty. Rest and recuperation for Celtic’s Champions League campaign is essential, Malta v Scotland an utter irrelevance.

At the age of 26 Griffiths has got seven caps and barely played in a game of any significance although it could be argued that it’s years since Scotland played in such a fixture.

Despite his 40 goal campaign in a team managed by Ronny Deila Gordon Strachan showed no inkling or enthusiasm towards selecting the in-form Celtic striker.

Unlike many Griffiths commitment to Scotland can’t be doubted, any appearance is a source of pride and honour but on this occasion Celtic have to step in and keep him under the watch of the Lennoxtown medics.

After scoring in the 4-1 win over Aberdeen the striker revealed: “I’ll go away with Scotland, see the physios there and what they’re thinking. I always want to play for my country. I don’t want to let anyone down. Hopefully I can pull through and get a chance.

If Gordon Strachan sees I’m ready to go, I’ll be delighted. If not I’ll sit on the bench, bite my tongue, and if I’m called upon I will give my best like I always do.”

Griffiths enthusiasm for international football is impressive but on this occasion misplaced. Before September is out he’ll have played against Barcelona and Manchester City in the greatest competition in the football.

Missing out on some hard labour in Malta is a small price to pay for a far far greater prize.
