Raheem Sterling won’t let sentiment get in the way of his Champions League goal.
After an indifferent first season at Manchester City the 21-year-old has made a devastating start to the new season as Manchester City threaten to run away with the Premier Aleague title.
Chelsea and Manchester United both enjoyed promising starts to the season but after six matches City still have a 100% record and now a four point advantage at the top of the table.
Sterling has played a lead role in securing that position but knows that it wouldn’t have been possible without Brendan Rodgers.
On Wednesday night the two men will be in opposite camps as Celticc host Manchester City in the Champions League with no room for sentiment.
At Anfield Rogers placed his faith in the talented teenager, his reward was a title near miss and now he faces up to a winger showing signs that he can now finish in front of goal as well as tormenting defenders.
“He (Rodgers) was someone who gave me my full chance in the Premier League,” Sterling recalled. “He gave me loads of starts and opportunities, and lots of confidence.
“It will be good to see him again and I wish him well, but on the day it all comes down to winning the game.
“He was massive for me. I try to learn from every manager I work with, and he is a man I definitely learned a lot from.
“He is a fantastic guy. He played me in different positions to help me understand those roles and what it took. He was great.”
Explaining his newly found goal touch Sterling added: “What is going to make me the player I want to be is scoring more goals, being cool in front of goal and scoring as many as I can.
“The manager has told me to enjoy scoring goals and seeing the ball go into the back of the net. The manager gives everyone the confidence, the belief and the motivation to achieve. It has been fantastic.”
