Celtic fans have added the tragic romantic ballad Grace to their songbook.

The song tells the tragic story of Joseph Plunkett, a leader of the 1916 Irish rebellion, penning a letter to his wife Grace Gifford before being executed by the British forces.

Celtic fans have been singing it in growing numbers since the start of the season and produced a stirring rendition during the 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

The chorus of the song is:

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms ad let this moment linger
They’ll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won’t be time to share our love for we must say goodbye.

Roared on from the Green Brigade in section 111 the atmosphere at last night’s match has been widely commented on.

Kicking off with You’ll Never Walk Alone a mix of older classics and never favourites ensured that the players fed off the excitement generated in the stands.

Commenting on the atmosphere Brendan Rodgers said: “It’s a noise I’ve never heard before since I’ve been up here. I’ve played around the world for and with teams in great atmospheres and I am a Celtic supporter so I understand how passionate they are here.

“But when you come here you recognise and realise why so many players throughout the world that play for various teams talk about the atmosphere here.

You can see that combination of that support and the team. When they play at that level it’s very difficult, even for a team of Manchester City’s quality. So you can actually say, when you have the Celtic support behind you it really is a like a 12th man.

The atmosphere was electric, it was an incredible evening for us and they really helped us to produce the performance that we did.”
