A group of Saltcoats residents want the town to recognise Bobby Lennox by erecting a statue of the Lisbon Lions.

While ten of Jock Stein’s famous squad came from the Glasgow area Lennox was the outsider from the Ayrshire town travelling daily back and forwards to Glasgow.

Lennox enjoyed an incredible Celtic career spanning 20 years during which he played in 571 matches and scored 273 goals- bettered only by Jimmy McGrory.

Now locals in Saltcoats have started a campaign to acknowledge the 73-year-old’s contribution to the town and for Scottish football.

Using a facebook page the campaigners announced: “Evening guys, today has been another very productive day we have spoken to local councillor Jim Montgomerie who is very enthusiastic about the campaign he has became the 4th member of our committee and given us a whole host of ideas and potential contacts who could help us out.

We have also been contacted by a journalist from the Glasgow Herald and Evening times so we are hoping to get something there to keep the campaign momentum rolling on.

Hoping to have further contact with Celtic this week and also should have an article in this week’s Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald.

Keep up the good work sharing and liking folk. All you’re support is the reason this has took off so thank you!!”

Lennox briefly left Celtic for a short spell with Houston Hurricane but returned under former team-mate Billy McNeill to add a league medal in 1979 and Scottish Cup medal a year later with his final appearance coming in the 1980 Scottish Cup Final win over Rangers (IL).
