Former Celtic midfielder Filip Twardzik is on trial with Polish side Gornik Zabrze.

The 23-year-old had his contract with Bolton Wanderers terminated in July and had been expected to return to the Czech Republic to pick up his career.

As a free agent Twardzik can sign a contract outside of the transfer window and is bound to attract interest from a number of clubs.

After arriving at Celtic in 2009 with his brother Patrik he got his first taste of top team action at the Emirates Cup in July 2010 with Neil Lennon in charge of Celtic.

A combination of groin and hamstring issues effectively put the midfielder out of football from September 2012 through until February 2014 and although he recaptured most of his ability the loss of 17 critical months proved too much for his Celtic career.

After seeing Twardzik back in action Lennon said: “I was delighted to see Filip back, he’s been out for such a long time.

We have high hopes for him but he’s had two years out of his career, two years that he won’t get back, but I’m hoping that there is a freshness about him coming in.

He’s a very talented player but we’ll just take it steady with him, see how he goes over the next few weeks and if things go well he’ll feature before the end of the season. That would be a great bonus.”

Lennon took Twardzik to Bolton in February 2015 but again he found his progress hampered by injuries- playing just five matches before leaving the club following the departure of Lennon and relegation to League One.

Gornik are currently fourth bottom of the Polish second division with four points from six matches.
