Chris Sutton couldn’t do anything other than admire James Maddison’s spectacular winning goal for Aberdeen against Sevco.

The on loan Norwich City kid came off the bench to deliver the match winner with a thrilling free kick that deserved to win any match.

Sutton made his own breakthrough at Carrow Road and still takes a keen interest on what’s going on at Norwich City.

Maddison’s strike was exactly the reason that Alex Neil sent him out on loan- gaining precious experience and sharing the pressure and tension of big matches.

Yesterday’s win lifts Aberdeen into second place with Sutton full of admiration for the goal that brings some shape to the SPFL table as another international break approaches.

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes was equally as pleased with the goal that gave his side three vital points despite being well short of top form.

“There’s no doubting that the moment of real quality should be applauded,” he said.

“It was a game that had a lot in it, a lot of challenges, a lot of bookings, a lot of frantic play, a lot of measured play, especially from Rangers I have to say but in the dying seconds of the game the stage was set for the young man to step up and score. That goal was as good as any goal you’ll see. It was terrific.

“It says everything about him. Terrific composure. When everybody is excitable around about him and the clock’s being run down, to produce that bit of quality that’s why we deserved to win the game. No question.”
