Roy Keane last night performed a remarkable u-turn as he praised Celtic following their 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

The former Manchester United skipper was scathing in his criticism of the hoops after the 7-0 defeat against Barcelona suggesting that the celebrations for qualifying were a reflection on the club’s lack of ambition.

Last night’s draw thrilled millions of television viewers across the world with Keane quick to pay tribute to the way that Celtic applied themselves.

They were outstanding, much better from Celtic,” he told ITV Sport. “It was a really good game, both teams going for it.

Celtic had the ideal start scoring early and obviously got the fans right behind them. (Moussa) Dembele was outstanding and to score three goals against Man City is never easy. Obviously City showed their quality at times as well, but it was a great game.

City were always in the game, they have some great players. With the quality City had on the pitch, you are always going to get chances and Celtic were hanging on for the last 20 minutes, but I think they deserved the breaks they got.”

Brendan Rodgers took his share of blame after the defeat in Barcelona but last night the Celtic boss was able to enjoy some credit for the way that his side performed.

“There is no doubt that was a big performance from ourselves,” Rodgers stated. “it was a big step forward for us as a team in terms of our improvement as a team.

“I can’t ask for any more from the players that we have at the moment. There is a real great feel around the club at the moment.

“I hope tonight is a real good marker and measure of how the players have improved but I know there is a long way to go in terms of where I want to be.”
