Kerr McInroy was the Scotland hero as Scot Gemmill’s side enjoyed an outstanding 1-0 win away to Portugal.

The Celtic midfielder scored in the 72nd minute to give Scotland a 100% record in the Qualifying Round for the u-17 European Championships, it’s not often that Scotland win away to the current European champions.

McInroy was joined by hoops team-mates Stephen Welsh, Robbie Deas, Daniel Church and Jack Aitchison with the Celtic academy providing the backbone of the international squad.

Scotland completed the group without losing a goal with Welsh, Deas and Church playing in all three matches

Aitchison scored a double in the 6-0 win over Malta in the opening match of group 10 with a 2-0 win over Wales in the second match ensuring that Scotland moved into the next stage of the competition.

Although it was at a different stage as recently as May Scotland lost 2-0 to Portugal in the final stage of last season’s competition with Gemmill’s side losing all three matches, including a defeat to Azerbaijan, with a miserable goal difference of 0-5.

Portugal went on to lift the trophy thanks to a penalty shoot out win over Spain in the final.

Thirty-two teams will take part in the elite round in spring with 16 teams going forward to the finals in Croatia at the end of the season.
