Coventry City began the post Tony Mowbray era with a 2-0 home win against Port Vale.

Mark Venus was in charge for the first league win of season that edges them above bottom placed Oldham on goal difference.

Mowbray resigned in midweek after 18 months in charge with the club still as far away as ever from the stability needed to reach back towards the top flight.

Former assistant Venus has taken the job on in a caretaker capacity but will step down as soon as a new management team is appointed.

I thought we were very good today across the whole pitch,” he told the club website after the win over Port Vale. “The energy the lads showed was fantastic and we fully deserved the win today.

We’ve been working on shape and when to press for the last few days and I think they executed that very well considering we haven’t had much time together after a hectic few days.

My message to them was to keep focused and continue doing what they have been doing, because in parts it has been very good. Today we added what had been missing previously.”

Venus added: “It is vital we build on this and continue to work hard. We have to approach training and preparation in the same way we have been doing and see where it takes us.

They need to take a bit of confidence from this, because we’ve faced a very good side who have started the season fantastically, specifically here at Vale Park.”

We maintained our performance throughout the 90 minutes, something that we have struggled to do so far this season. The next step is to maintain positive results and we’ll do everything we can to do that.”
