The bizarre managerial situation at York City took another unexpected twist today with Jackie McNamara ‘stepping down’ but staying on until his replacement is found.

Last week the club announced that the manager’s situation was dependent on a positive result against Braintree Town on Saturday.

A 1-1 draw could be interpreted in many ways with the club keeping quiet about McNamara over the weekend.

At lunchtime today the silence was broken with a statement that read: “Further to the statement last week regarding the future of York City manager, Jackie McNamara and following the game on Saturday, it has been decided, in the best interest of York City Football Club, that Jackie McNamara step down as First Team Manager.

After purposeful discussions it was agreed that results and performances, in the main, have not been acceptable nor have they achieved the high standards expected.

In order to assist the managerial transition period and to accommodate a thorough identification, interview and appointment process, the Chairman has asked Jackie McNamara to train and prepare the team until a suitable candidate has been determined. This process should be completed within two weeks.”

Whatever the terms are of McNamara’s contract it seems pointless retaining a manager that the players know carries no authority.

In recent times the tendency in these situations has been for managers to be put on gardening leave rather than paid off in a lump sum before reappearing in a new job.

Managerial contracts remain something of a mystery with little in the way of regulations involved.

In England the League Managers Association carries a lot of clout with clubs having to come to an agreement with the departing boss before a replacement is brought in.
